Poly(Glycerol Sebacate) in Biomedical Applications—A Review of the Recent Literature

Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) continues to attract attention for biomedical applications owing its favorable combination of properties. Conventionally polymerized by a two-step polycondensation glycerol and sebacic acid, variations synthesis parameters, reactant concentrations or specific chemical modifications, PGS materials can be obtained exhibiting wide range physicochemical, mechanical, morphological properties variety applications. has been extensively used in tissue engineering (TE) cardiovascular, nerve, cartilage, bone corneal tissues. Applications based drug delivery systems wound healing are also well documented. Research development the field continue progress, involving mainly modified structures using copolymers, hybrid, composite materials. Moreover, production self-healing electroactive introduced recently. After almost 20 years research on PGS, previous publications have outlined synthesis, modification, properties, applications, however, review paper covering most recent developments is lacking. The present thus covers comprehensively literature last five PGS-based biomaterials devices focusing advanced modifications medicine highlighting notable advances TE delivery.
